  6.     Lost from those archangelic thrones that star,
  7.     Fadeless and fixed, heaven's light of azure bliss;
  8.     Forbanned of all His splendor and depressed
  9.     Beyond the birth of the first sun, and lower
  10.     Than the last star's decline, I still endure,
  11.     Abased, majestic, fallen, beautiful,
  12.     And unregretful in the doubted dark,
  13.     Throneless, that greatens chaos-ward, albeit
  14.     From chanting stars that throng the nave of night
  15.     Lost echoes wander here, and of His praise
  16.     With ringing moons for cymbals dinned afar,
  17.     And shouted from the flaming mouths of suns.

  19.     The shadows of impalpable blank deeps--
  20.     Deep upon deep accumulate -- close down,
  21.     Around my head concentered, while above,
  22.     In the lit, loftier blue, star after star
  23.     Spins endless orbits betwixt me and heaven;
  24.     And at my feet mysterious Chaos breaks,
  25.     Abrupt, immeasurable. Round His throne
  26.     Throbs now the rhythmic resonance of suns,
  27.     Incessant, perfect, music infinite:
  28.     I, throneless, hear the discords of the dark,
  29.     And roar of ruin uncreate, than which
  30.     Some vast cacophony of dragons, heard
  31.     In wasted worlds, were purer melody.

  33.     The universe His tyranny constrains
  34.     Turns on: in old and consummated gulfs
  35.     The stars that wield His judgement wait at hand,
  36.     And in new deeps Apocalyptic suns
  37.     Prepare His corning: lo, His mighty whim
  38.     To rear and mar, goes forth enormously
  39.     In nights and constellations! Darkness hears
  40.     EnragΦd suns that bellow down the deep
  41.     God's ravenous and insatiable will;
  42.     And He is strong with change, and rideth forth
  43.     In whirlwind clothed, with thunders and with doom
  44.     To the red stars: God's throne is reared of change;
  45.     Its myriad and successive hands support
  46.     Like music His omnipotence, that fails
  47.     If mercy or if justice interrupt
  48.     The sequence of that tyranny, begun
  49.     Upon injustice, and doomed evermore
  50.     To stand thereby.

  52.     I, who with will not less
  53.     Than His, but lesser strength, opposed to Him
  54.     This unsubmissive brow and lifted mind,
  55.     He holds remote in nullity and night
  56.     Doubtful between old Chaos and the deeps
  57.     Betrayed by Time to vassalage. Methinks
  58.     All tyrants fear whom they may not destroy,
  59.     And I, that am of essence one with His,
  60.     Though less in measure, He may not destroy,
  61.     And but withstands in gulfs of dark suspense,
  62.     A secret dread for ever: for God knows
  63.     This quiet will irrevocably set
  64.     Against His own, and this my prime revolt
  65.     Yet stubborn, and confirmed eternally.
  66.     And with the hatred born of fear, and fed
  67.     Ever thereby, God hates me, and His gaze
  68.     Sees the bright menace of mine eyes afar
  69.     Through midnight, and the innumerable blaze
  70.     Of servile suns: lo, strong in tyranny,
  71.     The despot trembles that I stand opposed!
  72.     For fain am I to hush the anguished cries
  73.     Of Substance, broken on the racks of change,
  74.     Of Matter tortured into life; and God,
  75.     Knowing this, dreads evermore some huge mishap--
  76.     That in the vigils of Omnipotence,
  77.     Once careless, I shall enter heaven, or He,
  78.     Himself, with weight of some unwonted act,
  79.     Thoughtless perturb His balanced tyranny,
  80.     To mine advance of watchful aspiration.

  82.     With rumored thunder and enormous groan
  83.     (Burden of sound that heavens overborne
  84.     Let slip from deep to deep, even to this
  85.     Where climb the huge cacophonies of Chaos)
  86.     God's universe moves on. Confirmed in pride,
  87.     In patient majesty serene and strong,
  88.     I wait the dreamt, inevitable hour
  89.     Fulfilled of orbits ultimate, when God,
  90.     Whether through His mischance or mine own deed,
  91.     Or rise of other and extremer Strength,
  92.     Shall vanish, and the lightened universe
  93.     No more remember Him than Silence does
  94.     An ancient thunder. I know not if these,
  95.     Mine all-indomitable eyes, shall see
  96.     A maimed and dwindled Godhead cast among
  97.     The stars of His creating, and beneath
  98.     The unnumbered rush of swift and shining feet
  99.     Trodden into night; or mark the fiery breath
  100.     Of His infuriate suns blaze forth upon
  101.     And scorch that coarsened Essence; or His flame,
  102.     A mightier comet, roar and redden down,
  103.     Portentous unto Chaos. I but wait,
  104.     In strong majestic patience equable,
  105.     That hour of consummation and of doom,
  106.     Of justice, and rebellion justified.
